If you’re currently looking to book your next trip away, booking a hotel in Snowdonia should definitely be at the top of your list. Named the best sight in the UK, Snowdon is the highest mountain in Wales at an impressive elevation of 1,085 metres (3,560 ft) above the sea. Not only did it win best sight in the UK, it also beat some spectacular competitors such as St Ives Bay in Cornwall, the Three Sisters mountains in Glencoe Valley and the Stonehenge in Wiltshire.
It is actually the busiest mountain in the UK and attracts over 582,000 people annually, and it’s no surprise why. Formed by volcanoes during the ordovician period, the mountain is a popular destination for rock climbing due to its impressive cliff faces. There are multiple paths up to the summit as well as a Mountain Railway eich opened back in 1896! The cafe at the summit is a great way to have a break and take in the spectacular views.
The Welsh for Snowdon is Yr Wyddfa and translates as ‘the tumulus’ or ‘the barrow’ which is thought to be a reference to the Rhitta Gawr, a giant who held court in Snowdonia. Rhitta Gawr was defeated by King Arthur, who piled rocks onto the giant and in turn, became ‘Yr Wyddfa’.
Whilst we can’t promise any sightings of giants and mythical creatures, Snowdon is said to offer the most extensive views of Britain, with Ireland, Scotland and England being visible on clear days - with 232 kilometers in line of sight, it is the longest line in the British Isles. It is definitely a fantastic place to plan a trip and don’t forget to bring your camera! In addition to climbing or riding the mountain railway up to the summit, there are plenty of independent shops, pubs and activities to spend your time in. The foodie culture in Snowdonia is ever growing and North Wales has been deemed as the adventure capital of Europe, there’s definitely nowhere quite like it!
