The key responsibilities of a cyclist

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us took up cycling as a hobby and form of exercise during the lockdown periods. Now it seems that the virus is behind us, there are many more cyclists on the roads. If you enjoy cycling in Llandudno why not try the Deganwy cycle path? Take a look through this selection of responsibilities which cyclists should be aware of at all times, to take care of their own safety and the safety of those around them.

Wear correct safety gear

Mainly for your own safety and less for the people around you, wearing safety gear when riding is

crucial incase you are involved in an accident. Perhaps the most important piece of safety gear is

a helmet. Helmets are vital in preventing serious head injuries during cycling accidents, wearing

a helmet really could save your life! You may also want to look into purchasing some protective

clothing, as well as knee and elbow pads. If you fall off your bike at high speeds on a cycling route

with harsh terrain, you could be left with some painful cuts and grazes on unprotected areas of the body.

Obey Road signs and rules

Cyclists have the same rights as motorcycles and cars, which means they also need to adhere to

the same rules and regulations of the roads. Disregarding the road rules and signs could lead to

serious accidents and injuries, and also remember that cyclists do not have the protection privilege

of being inside a car, so they must be extremely cautious and aware. Cyclists, like cars, must always

be riding on the left hand side of the road. Cyclists should also not be riding on public footpaths if they

are over the age of 12, and should always use a bicycle lane if provided with one.

Lights, Brakes and Bells

If you are out enjoying a bike ride, it is crucial that you are able to be seen, heard and able to stop

suddenly. Vehicles and other cyclists need to be aware of your presence on the roads and cycling

routes, to avoid any potential accidents. Therefore, you must make sure your bike is fitted with lights,

bells and a brake. Proper and regular bike maintenance needs to be done to ensure that all these partsare in good working order, and are not a danger hazard. If cycling during the evening when it is dark,

it is important to wear reflective clothing so you are easy to spot by vehicles and other cyclists. It is also

strongly recommended to fit your bike with, or potentially wear a camera on your helmet. This is just in

case you are involved in an accident, so there is visual footage of what happened. If you are involved in

an altercation with a vehicle, or an accident that wasn't your fault, then you will have visual proof of

exactly what happened.
